7 Risks of taking unprescribed medication

Knowing and recognizing the issue is very important especially when it comes to disease because unless the disease is not known proper medication to cure the disease cannot be given. The prescribed medication acts as an instant cure in most cases. On the other hand, it is very dangerous to take unprescribed medications. Some of the risks are given below:

1- The problem can get worse

Since the actual problem is not being treated and the unprescribed medications that you are taking are not related to the problem so the actual problem will get worse. It is very dangerous to guess your problem and treat it on your own because the problem that might be minor at the earlier stage might get even worse with self-medication and delay in treatment.

2- Dangerous side effects of the medication

Every medicine has its own effects and side effects on each body. It might react differently to each person. If you take it without a doctor’s permission it might cause constipation, skin allergy, insomnia, headache and can even worsen your disease

3- Prescribed medications can react with unprescribed medication

Many times doctors give medicine in such a combination that it does not react or harm the body or its organs temporarily and in the long run also. But when we tend to take self-medication, it has a risk of reacting with prescribed medicines resulting in an emergency situation or long-term damage.

4- Outdated medicine formulas

There are plenty of medicines that have been improved over the years by minimizing their side effects but there is still some examples present that clearly indicates how dangerous these medicines can get. For example, the Elmiron Lawsuit case which was about the serious long-term eye damage caused by a bladder cyst medicine.

5- Misinterpretation of medicine

A person with no or little medical knowledge it may happen that you take the wrong medicine by misinterpreting it for another. Or you might think it is healing only one specific problem however in reality it is affecting other body organs as well.

6- Addiction causing

There might be a risk that the medicine is addiction-causing and if you take it without a doctor’s prescription you might not be able to alter it.  Consequently, you will be dependent on it and it will become your habit. Addiction causing medicine is only given by doctors to treat a problem, for the betterment of the patient and it is altered slowly so there is no damage from immediately leaving it or having it forever.

7- Wrong dose

If you take medicine on your own it is possible that it might not suit your specific gender, age, weight or maybe it can contradict your medical history causing severe damage. It is also possible that you take the wrong amount of medicine and the wrong dosage or overdose can cause immediate emergency situations. In other cases, it decreases the body’s immunity to endure.
