Why Diwali is celebrated, Reasons Behind Diwali Celebration

Diwali, the Indian festival of lights is celebrated to remove all the darkness from our life and to fulfil our future with joy and happiness. Diwali is celebrated to honour Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi and the God of wisdom, Ganesh. Lets move a little back and talk about how this great Festival was discovered.

There are various tales which depicts various events behind this festival .In Northern India there is a tale related to Diwali ,which is about the King  Rama ,one of the embodiment of the God Vishnu. According to this tale , when an evil king of Lanka captured Rama’s wife Sita ,at that time king Rama builds up an army of monkeys to rescue her .The monkeys were successful in making Sita free from that evil king . Afterwards as  Rama and Sita Returned to the North , they were welcomed with millions of lights spread across the Ayodhya city . In this way Diwali was discovered according to this tale .

In  another tale it shows us how the five royal brothers, the Pandavas got defeated in the game of dice against their brothers, Kauravas. After that according to the rule the Pandavas had to serve a term of 13 years in exile. After those 13 years they returned to Hastinapur in Kartik Amavashya. To celebrate this occasion of the Pandavas coming back to Hastinapur , the common people lighted up bright earthen lamps in order to welcome them. This is believed that after this event Diwali was discovered.

According to another legend , log ago when the God lost their battle against the devils , Godess Kali took birth from the forehead of GodessDurga and defeated all the devils . But after that Goddess Kali lost her control and started to kill everyone who came in her way .At last she stopped when Lord Shiva intervened . This event is celebrated as Kali Puja, which is celebrated in different parts of India at the same time as Diwali .

Now we got a more or less idea about the history of Diwali  and now let’s talk about how it is celebrated in India .Diwali is celebrated in India for five days during Hindu Lunisolar month , Kartika. During this time people lights up their houses  interior and exterior with candles, diyas , small bulbs and many more .During this time people cleans  and decorates their houses with rangolis (Designs made on the floor with colours).

During this occasion, people wear finest clothes , meet and greet each other with boxes full of mithais (sweets). Children enjoys  this festival by lighting fireworks and playing with each other .The full family takes part in family feasts and share their gifts after a long year of work.

As it is told that this festival is of five days, let’s discuss the events performed in all these days .In the first day , people usually clean their houses and gives a new look to their residence. They decorates their house with lamps and diyas to light up every corner of the house and remove darkness from their lives.

The second day is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi or regional equivalent which is actually proper Diwali in the south of India. On the third day, the northern, central , eastern and western part of the country celebrates  the main day of Diwali, on the day of Lakshmi Puja, which is the darkest night of the traditional month.

On the fourth day after Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja is celebrated which is associated with the relationship between husband and wife.

And on the last day Bhai dooj is celebrated, which is related to the relationship between brother and sister. While other Hindu and Sikh craftsmen marks this day as Viswakarma Puja.

Different people celebrates Diwali in different ways but with the same motive of victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
